Skillet Hamburger with Tomatoes and Cheese
An easy to make skillet hamburger dish loaded with cheese and tomato sauce. Serve it alone with some Homemade Coleslaw or use it on top of gluten or grain free pasta or rice for a quick dinner time meal.
Prep time: 10 minutes Cook time: 20 minutes Makes: 4 servings Difficulty: Medium
Gluten free Egg free Grain free Soy free
Ingredients:
1 Onion, chopped
1 stalk Celery, chopped
1 very small Mild hot pepper, finely chopped (optional)
1 clove Garlic, minced
1 to 2 tablespoons Butter or coconut oil
2 tablespoons Dried oregano
1 teaspoon Ground rosemary
1 teaspoon Cumin
1 teaspoon Dried thyme
1/2 teaspoon Mild ground red pepper (optional)
1 teaspoon Sea salt
1/2 to 1 teaspoon Ground black pepper
1 large Tomato, peeled and chopped
1 1/2 pounds Ground beef (not too lean)
1/2 cup Tomato sauce, plain, about 1/2 of an 8 ounce can (not spaghetti sauce)
1 cup Mozzarella cheese, grated
Beef broth or water (optional)
Substitutions and Notes:
  • Fresh tomato & tomato sauce: Instead of using the fresh tomato and the jarred tomato sauce, you can use a 14 ounce can of plain peeled tomatoes. Drain some of the liquid off before adding the tomatoes so it doesn't get too runny. You can add a bit of liquid to the skillet and adjust the thickness of it as you're cooking it if needed.
  • Oregano: You can use 3 tablespoons chopped fresh oregano instead of dried.
  • Rosemary: You can use 1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh rosemary instead of the dried.
  • Thyme: You can use 2 teaspoons fresh thyme instead of the dried.
  • Grain free: Don't serve it with rice. Instead serve it with grain free pasta or homefries.
Directions:
  • Prepare and chop the onion, celery, garlic and hot pepper, if using. Peel and chop the tomato. Grate the cheese. If desired, keep a little bit of the cheese separate and sprinkle it on when you serve it.
  • In a large deep skillet, melt the butter over medium to medium high heat. When melted, add the chopped onions, celery, garlic and hot pepper. Stir to coat all in butter.
  • Add the oregano, rosemary, cumin, thyme, ground red pepper, salt and pepper. Mix and stir occasionally for about 5 minutes.
  • Add the chopped tomato. Mix well and cook for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Move all the tomato mixture to the outside edge of the pan. Add the ground beef and stir to break it up as it cooks. Leave the tomato mixture at the sides of the pan until the hamburger is fully cooked. When the hamburger is fully cooked, then stir the tomato mixture into it and mix well.
  • Add the tomato sauce and mix well. If the mixture is too dry, add a bit of water or a couple tablespoons beef broth. Add the grated cheese and mix well. Cook until cheese has fully melted.

Serve. Sprinkle the reserved cheese over it. You can serve this with gluten or grain free pasta, if desired. Or have it by itself and serve with home fries and some Homemade Coleslaw.

Enjoy!

Note: Use all organic ingredients. Ensure all the dried spices are labeled certified gluten free and any packaged items are labeled gluten free.
