Having a homemade replacement for store bought seasoning salt is a great addition to your gluten free, whole food pantry. It's versatile and gives a nice kick to your meals.

Most store bought seasoning salt contains MSG, which is one of the worst ingredients ever added to food.

If you want to make a whole food version then you can eliminate 2 common powdered spices - onion and garlic powder. The reason is that these 2 ingredients need additional processing when they get turned into powder to remove the oils (by commercial manufacturers), thus they really do lose their "whole food" status.

Fresh onions and garlic are extremely common in the home kitchen, so simply add a minced garlic clove and some diced onions to your dish.

If you make your own dried / dehydrated onions and garlic, they are fine to use (1 tablespoon each). They will contain natural oils, so use up within a couple weeks, or store in an air tight container in the freezer.

Use all organic ingredients, and ensure all the dried spices are labeled certified gluten free.

Ingredients:
1/4 cup Ground black pepper
2 tablespoons Chili powder
3 tablespoons Paprika
2 tablespoons Dried parsley leaf (optional)
1 tablespoon Ground red pepper flakes (optional)
1 tablespoon Homemade dehydrated onion powder (optional)
1 tablespoon Homemade dehydrated garlic powder (optional)
Substitutions and Notes:
  • Onion and garlic powder: If you want to maintain this spice mix as a whole food, then either make your own dehydrated onions and garlic, or skip them and use them fresh when you prepare your meal. You can use store bought onion and garlic powder, though due to the way it's manufactured, the natural oils have been removed so it won't be a whole food anymore, and the flavor won't be as nice.
Directions:
  • Prepare any of the fresh herbs you are going to use, by chopping and dehydrating them.
  • Mix well by shaking in a jar or blend in a food processor. Store in an airtight container.

Use this wherever you would normally use Seasoning Salt. You can add some sea salt, fresh minced garlic and diced onions to your food (if not using onion and garlic powder in the mix). Salt doesn't need to be pre-added to the mix, since you will likely need different amounts of salt for each dish. And really, it's super easy to add salt. Fresh garlic and fresh onions are also much better for us when used fresh, and provide a much better flavor.

Don't make large quantities. Make enough so it will be used up. Remember, you don't want to be eating old food.

When using your own dehydrated onions and garlic, it contains natural oils, so use it up within a couple weeks, or store it in an airtight container in the freezer for a couple months.

If you made a version of this mix that doesn't contain homemade dehydrated onion and garlic, it will keep for up to 2 months.

Enjoy!
